Report▕ Dongjin Li upset the plot by defeat Egyptia

The 2018 J.P. Morgan China Open kicked off on Wednesday Sep 5 here at SECA Academy Shanghai. Round one saw fairly expected results overall, but with several great matches, notably on the women’s side with local wildcard Li upsetting Egyptian veteran Kawy.

On the women’s side, Welsh seed Evans held off young Egyptian Metwally 3-1, while English veteran Waters defeated another Egyptian talent Hammamy in a tight 3-0. Englandwoma. Lust proved too solid for Australian veteran Grinham, while India’s Chinappa overcame Australian lefty Lobban and Malaysian legend David eased past hard-hitting Indian Karthik. England’s Tomlinson had several match balls in the fourth against seeded Egyptian Hany, but Hany kept her nerve to force a fifth and clutch out an 11-9 victory in the fifth. Hong Kong’s Chan also edged out higher-seeded American Blatchford in a well-fought match full of clean and spectacular rallies.

In the biggest result of the day’s play, local wildcard Dongjin Li upset the plot by taking out veteran Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy, three games to love. The young Chinese player started off strongly, mixing aggressive lengths with calculated boasts and drops from the back. Kawy fired back with her signature straight and crosscourt volley nick volley nick winners, but Li continued to hustle hard around the court, in contrast to Kawy whose movement was not looking at its sharpest. All games were close, with the first and third going to tiebreak, but Li held her nerve to close out a well deserved upset over a big name in women’s squash.

On the men’s side , first up was the seeded Malaysian Adnan who overcame Welshman Creed in three games. But in the following match, Creed’s seeded compatriot Makin took revenge 3-0 on young Malaysian talent Ng, who struggled with Makin’s pace and physicality. The three other 3-0 shutouts were Qatar’s rising star Tamimi taking out India’s Sandhu, Scotsman Clyne removing Englishman Coleman, and fellow Englishman Richards easing past injured local wildcard Wang. The skillful Egyptian Reda mounted a challenge to seeded Englishman Waller, but ultimately lost 3-1 after a series of tins at crucial points in the third.

In the closest men’s match of the day, German seed Kandra survived a heated , physical five-setter with young Egyptian talent Hammamy. Kandra took the first game, but Hammamy played smart and determined squash to take very close second and third games, despite an ankle injury break that delayed play for about 15 minutes. At 5-5 in the fifth game, after almost 100 minutes, Hammamy finally lost focus with a few cheap tins, and the fit and consistent Kandra pushed forward to win 11-6.
